Tour: Best of Samos
Your tour will depart from the picturesque port of Pythagorion –ancient Samos. A pleasant drive will bring you to the Hereon at the place where the Temple of Hera is. Temple of Hera is one of the largest temples in Greece. This is the largest freestanding effigy to survive from ancient Greece and was built to honor Apollo. Herodotus says that this temple was the largest and richest he ever saw. It was built in a mixed Doric and Ionic order and was dipteral with a length of 108,73m, a width of 54,68m and a height of 25m.
Our tour continues by visiting Samos town, where we will be guided in the Archaeological Museum, which is the highlight of the attractions in Samos town.It is set behind the small central park beside the restored Neoclassical Town Hall. The Museum houses one of the best provincial collections in Greece in both the Paskalion building and a modern wing, across the wing, which was designed and built with one purpose in mind – to be home to the star attraction the 5meters Kouros statue , which was discovered at the temple of Hera.
A little free time will be given to further explore the island’s unique capital. Enjoy the views to the picturesque harbor town including the upper town on the hill, called “Pano Vathi”, traditional built, birthplace of the freedom fighters, Constantine Lachanas and Themistoklis Sophoulis and the composer Manolis Kalomiris.
